First things first…

What the heck is an Instagram Ban?

Instagram is pretty straight forward with letting you know you have been banned. If you try to log in but receive the infamous message –  your account has been disabled for violating our terms:

Then, yeah, you might be banned, my friend.

Being unable to perform specific actions like uploading a photo, following, liking, or leaving a comment – is also a sign you might have been banned. There are different types of bans too. For example, you could be banned from liking your users’ posts for a day or two. The same goes for following, DMing, and other daily Instagram activities.

In any case, Instagram banns users when they don’t follow the Community Guidelines. As they have said it themselves – they just want to “protect the community.”

So, whatever you did must have been seen as a mild threat. But keep in mind that like most platforms, Instagram makes mistakes as well. Sometimes, it’s just a bad case of not being on the same page – a misunderstanding, if you will.

And in most cases, a misunderstanding can be resolved and dealt with. That’s what we’re trying to do!

Before you jump to a conclusion, many of us would – Instagram disabled my account for no reason; let’s first rule out all of the possible options.

Why the heck did Instagram ban my account?

There are a few reasons why Instagram may have banned your account. Before we start to discuss how to get unbanned from Instagram – let’s get to the bottom of why it was banned in the first place.

Long story short, it’s spam, spam, spam

Instagram doesn’t like spam and will get out of their own way to let you know. If you aggressively follow, like, comment, or DM certain users – Instagram will be notified of such activities. And in turn, ban or restrict your account.

But how much activity is too much?

Here are a few useful facts to help you avoid this awkward situation. Many people aren’t even aware of these limitations that could lead to the Instagram account disabled situation!

  • You can only follow up to 7.500 users in total.

  • Most accounts are able to follow and unfollow from 300-500 accounts per day.

  • You are limited to 6000 actions in total per month.

  • You can only like 300 posts within an hour.

  • You can’t post more than 30 hashtags per post.

  • You can only delete one post at a time!

Pro tip: If you follow too many users within an hour or 24 hours, you will receive a message telling you the limit has been reached. Most users claim that Instagram only allows you to follow/unfollow 160 people per hour, but some even say as low as 60.

Keep in mind that due to Instagram’s dynamic nature, these numbers are not 100% correct. They also may change depending on the size of an individual account.

Important spam facts to keep in mind

As mentioned above, you aren’t even aware you’re breaching Instagram community guidelines in most cases. Or someone else is doing it on your behalf.

To help you avoid the unwanted spam-caused ban, here are some additional scenarios you could encounter.

Be sure everyone from your team is on the same page. See that all of your team members that have access to your Instagram account are in on all of the rules and guidelines. This includes each host of the Instagram takeover campaign you’re planning and any other individual posting on your Instagram.

And, let’s not forget one of the key lessons on how to become an Instagram influencer – keep an active page, but don’t spam. There’s a fine line between being proactive about your passion, and well, spamming your audience, so make sure you don’t cross it.

Suppose you, too, like many entrepreneurs nowadays are struggling to make it. In that case, you might be asking – but how do you attract customers on Instagram without the massive follows and constant interactions? We get it, especially as a new account, you believe you should go on a massive (and aggressive) campaign. This is when you start liking, commenting, posting, DMing excessively. And, that’s how you could quickly get into trouble with Instagram.

Luckily, we’ve got just the solution you need. You can just relax and do your thing while we do the heavy lifting for you. No more ban scares, just smooth sailing to Instagram stardom. Flock Social can help you grow your followers organically and completely safe. No guidelines violated, no rules breached, only perfectly targeted follower growth at an optimal pace. Test it out and see for yourself.

Only share content you either took or have the right to!

Basically, to avoid copyright infringement, mostly share content that you have made yourself. It’s pretty straightforward.

But if you’d like to know more about the topic, give intellectual property rights a read! And in the meantime, give credit where credit is due. If you really like a post from another user’s feed – post it and tag them! Or simply ask for permission.

This one is pretty obvious – Follow the Law!

“I fought the Law, and the Law won”! Well, duh. There never is a good enough reason to not follow the law!

“Instagram is not a place to support or praise terrorism, organized crime, or hate groups. Offering sexual services, buying or selling firearms, alcohol, and tobacco products between private individuals, and buying or selling illegal or prescription drugs (even if legal in your region) is also not allowed.”

As with any online platform these days, there are sketchy people looming around the corner. From explicit content to even explicit content involving minors – Instagram has ZERO tolerance for any kind of online abuse or discrimination.

If you ever come across any kind of foul content, please report it to Instagram!

There’s much more to read and be aware of. We would highly recommend reading all of Instagram’s Community Guidelines!

After that whirlwind of information – it’s time to get to business! A.k.a, the real reason you’re here. This is…

Instagram account disabled: How to recover it

Sure, that’s all great, you might think, but how do I get my Instagram back?

Firstly, let’s talk about the elephant in the room – how long does a ban usually last? It depends.

It depends on how many times you have been banned in the past…If any. It also depends on what caused the ban in the first place. Let the punishment fit the crime kind of mentality, you know?

But, usually, a temporary ban lasts from around 24 – 48 hours. Usually.

That sentence may be extended if you continue doing the same crime. Duh.

But to answer yet another million-dollar question.

Can you get permanently banned on Instagram?

Short answer, yes

This, however, depends on your activities and behavior after the temporary ban. If you continue spamming, posting inappropriate content, or just be a big pain in the behind for Instagram – they might ban your account, well, forever

But for the majority of you who just want to know how to get unbanned from Instagram, this is what to do. A short yet helpful guide for 2020.

How to get unbanned from Instagram

  1. Go to “My account has been disabled” section on Instagram.

  1. Fill out all the required information

  1. Add a functional email address.

  1. Once you receive a verification code via email, Instagram will require you to take a selfie and prove your identity! This is Instagram’s way of avoiding online identity theft. So don’t be shy, send your pic!

  1. Wait for the reactivation.

The process seems very simple and not at all long. But that might not always be the case.

Sometimes, you will have to repeat this method a couple of times to recover your Instagram account. That’s the only way to go about this in some cases. Unfortunately, there are many Instagram account recovery requests, much more than the Instagram support staff members working on resolving them. Therefore, in most cases, it’s best to send multiple appeals if your first one gets ignored for some reason.

It also depends on why you got banned in the first place, so keep that in mind!

As a secondary and cautionary step, try laying low for two days. That means zero, and we mean Z-E-R-O interactions for 48 hours. No liking, no DMing, no following or unfollowing – just overall nothing.

However, on the third day, simply continue using the app the way you normally would. But please, whatever you do, don’t overuse it! Follow the activity restrictions we’ve listed above! You’ll most likely be fine after that.

And, that’s how you recover your Instagram account after being banned.

And now, for those of you who haven’t been banned and are not planning on being in the future, here’s…

How to avoid the Instagram account disabled situation

The best way to go about this, other than following all Community Guidelines correctly – is by linking other social media networks to your Instagram account!

This doesn’t only secure your page, but it helps you seem more sincere and legit online! If Instagram, by any chance, does consider your account to be suspicious, it helps to know you actually exist outside of your Instagram image.

Here’s how you can link other social media accounts:

  1. Go to Settings on your Instagram profile.

  1. Tap Account.

  1. Tap Linked Accounts.

  1. You’ll be able to link Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and many more! Link as many as possible!

Another thing to be aware of is how complete your Instagram account is. From your profile picture to your Instagram Bio and posts – make sure you’ve completed all the steps necessary to look genuine and real.

A little goes a long way when it comes to these things.

In all seriousness, with or without the ban scare – you should always do your best to follow all the Community Guidelines on the site. Since Instagram is so transparent with what’s okay and what isn’t – it shouldn’t be too hard to do so.

If they’ve made a mistake regarding your ban, it’s pretty easy to recover your Instagram account. Regardless, the ban lasts up to 48 hours in most cases. It’s not that big of a deal.

Until you actually need this blog, make sure to behave on the platform, respect your fellow users, use your own content, or give credit, and always have fun!
